Squalene

09-14-2021

Squalane is a lipid which has been used in cosmetic formulations for over 60 years.

It is a derivative of squalene; a lipid which is synthesised by the human body and found in sebum—an oil naturally excreted by the skin.

Healthy skin barrier function and moisture retention are enhanced by squalene, and this skin-soothing emollient softens the skin while making it feel supple and plump.

Squalene is non-irritating and anti-inflammatory and can help to rebuild the barrier of skin that is dry or sensitive by delivery of fatty acids. It also has anti-oxidant properties to keep the skin looking bright and fresh.

Natural production of squalane peaks in teenage years and declines substantially by our 30s, however, skin care can replenish our barrier of this conditioning ingredient.

Squalene oxidises easily in skincare.

To combat this, a more stable form of squalene was produced in the 1950s.

The stabilised ingredient is called squalane, and both its compatibility with the skin and its shelf life are greater than squalene.

The squalane used in modern skincare is typically derived from olives, rice bran or amaranth oil.

Squalane is a lightweight lipid, and when used properly, shouldn’t congest the skin.

It is often used in cleansers and moisturisers.

If you have dry or sensitive skin, look to RATIONALE’s Integrity Collection. The collection features squalene alongside a selection of barrier fortifying and skin identical phospholipids, skin signalling proteins and Australian SolarRepair botanicals.
