This year we celebrate 10 years of Biopelle in Australia. Skindepth Dermatology was one of the first clinics to stock Biopelle's Vitamin A range, Retriderm. This life changing retinol is still in clinic today in our Melbourne Clinic, and there is a good reason it still graces our shelves!
Retriderm contains retinol. Retinol is a form of Vitamin A, a crucial ingredient in an antiaging skincare routine, and one commonly recommended by our dermal clinicians at Skindepth Dermatology. Vitamin A is renowned for its powerful effects on skin health and appearance. Here’s a detailed look at what Vitamin A is, how it functions in skincare, and why it’s a go-to for dermatologists, dermal clinicians and one of our favourite ingredients at Skindepth dermatology in Melbourne. Vitamin A primarily exists in the following forms:
- Retinol: The most used form skincare products. It is effective in promoting skin renewal and addressing signs of aging, as found in Retriderm.
- Retinoids: Prescription-strength derivatives (such as tretinoin) are more potent and often recommended for specific skin concerns like severe acne or advanced signs of aging.
- Carotenoids: Plant-based forms, such as beta-carotene, which the body can convert into retinol. While they provide antioxidant benefits, they are less potent than retinol in topical applications.
So let's focus on retinol; as after prescription grade retinoic acid/tretinoin, it is the most potent and closest to the purest form that is active in the skin.
Retinol plays a crucial role in regulating the skin’s cellular turnover process. It promotes the differentiation of keratinocytes (skin cells) and encourages the shedding of dead skin cells. This process helps to prevent clogged pores and promotes a smoother skin texture. We often use retinol in combination with other skin care products such as hydroxy acids, at our cosmetic dermatology clinic, to achieve superior results.
Most of our patients that see our dermal clinicians and aesthetic nurses want to stimulate collagen production. Retinol does this by activating specific genes responsible for collagen synthesis. Collagen is a protein that provides structure and elasticity to the skin. Increased collagen levels can significantly reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. We often use our energy-based devices such as nano-fractional radiofrequency to heighten our results.
Retinol modulates sebum (oil) production in the sebaceous glands. By balancing oil levels, it can reduce the likelihood of acne formation and improve skin clarity. The Skindepth Dermatology Dermatologists will often prescribe oral retinoid to help combat acne. Retinol may also assist in the improvement of acne scars.
Retinol enhances the skin's barrier function by promoting the production of essential lipids. A healthy skin barrier helps retain moisture, preventing dryness and irritation. We often will ask our patients to introduce gradually into their routine as instructed by our expert dermal clinicians here at our Melbourne based Skin clinic.
Proprietary Aqueous Suspension: Unlike traditional oil-based formulations, Retriderm’s oil-free aqueous suspension enhances penetration into the skin (improving bioavailability) ensuring that retinol reaches deeper layers of the skin
High Protein Content: The formulation includes collagen and elastin to support retinol metabolism into retinoic acid, minimizing irritation compared to other retinol products
Superior Delivery System: The absence of oil allows for better absorption, delivering more retinol into the skin layers without the irritation typical of other products.
Enhanced Efficacy: Retriderm approaches the efficacy of prescription-strength tretinoin while reducing the side effects such as burning, redness, and dryness
How to Incorporate Retinol successfully!
- Start Slow: If you’re new to Vitamin A, introduce it gradually into your skincare routine. Use it 1-2 times a week and increase frequency as your skin adjusts. We recommend starting with the Retriderm Mild 0.5%
- Apply in the evening: Vitamin A can increase your skin’s sensitivity to sunlight, so it’s best used in your night time routine. Apply it after cleansing and before your moisturiser.
-
Moisturise: Pair your Vitamin A products with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid or ceramides to maintain moisture levels and minimize irritation such a hyalceutic or regen ceutic.
