We all try to avoid sugar so we can squeeze into that killer dress - but just WHY is it so bad for your skin?
When you consume sugar (or high-glycemic foods that rapidly convert to sugar) your body breaks them down from carbohydrates, into glucose. Which raises your insulin levels. This spike in insulin levels causes a burst of inflammation throughout the body. Inflammation produces enzymes that break down collagen and elastic, resulting in sagging skin and wrinkles. Digested sugar permanently attaches to the collagen in your skin through a process known as glycation. Aside from increasing the effects of aging, glycation can also exacerbate skin conditions like acne and rosacea. Plus, the more sugar you eat, the more likely it is you'll develop insulin resistance, which can manifest as excess hair growth (hirsutism) and dark patches on the neck and in body creases!
So how do we stay away from the sweet nasties we crave so much? Our solution (of the moment) is grapefruit with cinnamon on top. Not only will it help to curb your sugar craving, but the cinnamon has brain-boosting and inflammation-fighting benefits. Win-Win! Try raw, or sprinkling with ground cinnamon (and honey if you’re feeling cheeky), and baking for 10-15 minutes for a juicy, sweet and hot alternative.
