No one enjoys looking in the mirror and seeing new wrinkles. Of course, facial lines and wrinkles are an integral part of our skin ageing and can occur at any age. They are related to movement of the muscles that attach to the skin. But naturally we’d all like to do something about them.

Anti-wrinkle injections aim to soften the lines by gently relaxing the facial muscles, resulting in smoother and more youthful looking skin. They are used to treat frown lines, forehead wrinkles and crows feet. They may also be used to treat some lines around the mouth, the neck and scrunching 'bunny' lines of the nose.

The botulinum toxin which is used may also treat some medical conditions such as bruxism (teeth grinding) and excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis).

At SKINDEPTH, our dermatologists and nurses can perform any of these anti wrinkle treatments in safe, comfortable surroundings.

Another effect of ageing on skin is where our skin loses volume in the form of collagen.  Hyaluronic acid is the building block of collagen, and thankfully can be replaced using a synthetic form known as dermal fillers.

The benefits of dermal fillers are they can smooth out wrinkles and folds, volumise furrows, improve uneven skin contour as well as plump the skin. Essentially they can be used as a non-surgical treatment to reshape the face. They can help with lines around the mouth, the nasolabial area, dark circles under the eyes and cheeks, as well as the lips and sagging jaw line. You’ll find dermal fillers can freshen your skin, and give you a less tired appearance.

At SKINDEPTH, an initial consultation with Dr Alice Rudd would assess if fillers are suitable and safe for you, and which is the most appropriate product for your skin.

Using the science of physics, medical grade laser therapies continue to provide remarkable breakthroughs in the treatment of skin imperfections and skin rejuvenation. Essentially lasers use wavelengths of light to respond to colours in the skin. The lasers select targets in the skin and heat them, leading to their disappearance or reduction. The good news is lasers can safely and effectively treat redness (capillaries and spider veins, birth marks), brown marks (pigmentation, melasma and sunspots), and also provide skin tightening. Lasers may also be used on low settings to provide gentle rejuvenation.

At SKINDEPTH Dermatology we are experienced in the use of the V Beam Perfecta. This is considered the gold standard pulse dye laser in the treatment of redness and pigmentation.

Radio frequency is the most technologically advanced treatment for skin tightening available today. It works by piercing tiny needles into the dermis of the skin to trigger the skins own natural healing process. This results in collagen and elastin remodelling.

At SKINDEPTH, we offer the very latest radio frequency treatment using the Endymed Intensif micro needling technology. This leaves you with rejuvenated, refreshed skin while reducing the appearance of wrinkles, acne and traumatic scars, whatever your skin type.

LED is a painless skin treatment first developed by NASA. It has healing properties targeted to each layer of the skin depending on the wavelength/light colour used.

Red light stimulates fibroblasts in the dermis that produce collagen to rejuvenate skin. Red light promotes cellular repair and healing post surgical, and non-surgical treatment. It helps to accelerate healing after skin cancer and general surgery, as well as significantly reduces bruising and swelling  after laser treatment.

Blue light works by attacking the propionibacterium acnes that plays a role in acne. This is a fabulously natural way of treating pimples, without taking medications.

The best thing about Healite LED is that it does not cause thermal (heat) damage, and so is very safe in ALL skin types. Combined with a Skindepth Peel, the Healite provides a perfect 'no down time', pick me up. At Skindepth we want our patients to bounce right back, so we offer LED treatments after all our laser treatments

We understand how debilitating acne can be, and that medication may not be an option for some patients, which is why we are pleased to now offer range of nonprescription treatment modalities.

Kleresca acne treatment

This topical treatment has been developed to improve nodular cystic acne and restore complexion with no need for medication in suitable patients. Requiring two treatments a week for six weeks, Kleresca harnesses the power of biophotonics to treat your acne and stimulate the tissue’s own repair systems. The treatment is a comfortable experience and uses a high intensity in-clinic light device together with a photoconverter gel to kill bacteria in the skin and initiate healing. To assess your suitability for Kleresca acne treatment please contact us to arrange an appointment.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels have been well studied in the treatment of acne. The most commonly used chemical peel in treating acne is salicylic acid, resorcinol, lactic acid and pyruvic acid. Salicylic acid is the most popular used ingredient in acne peels because it’s oil soluble, which means that it helps to dissolve the oils that sit in our pores. This oil when left in the pore can create a great environment for bacteria to grow which is why it’s important to regulate and reduce excess amounts. The Salicylic acid works like a bottlebrush to get deep into the pore and clean it out. It also has an anti-inflammatory effect to reduce the redness associated with infected breakouts.  You can now start to understand why this type of chemical peel is used as a first line therapy for acne. Best results are seen over a series of treatments and combined with take home skin care.

ALA-PDT is a popular winter skin treatment that combines photodynamic therapy (PDT) and vascular laser to effectively treat redness and aged, sun damaged skin. It's the go-to treatment for pre-cancerous skin lesions, so if you have sunspots (solar keratosis) this is the treatment for you.  It requires very good sun protection after treatment, which is why it’s the perfect winter treatment for anyone who would like to reduce redness and improve the appearance and texture of sun damaged skin.

Should I worry about sunspots?

Sunspots, or ‘Solar Keratosis’, are extremely common in Australia and are also known as ‘actinic keratosis’ lesions, which may appear as rough red, scaly or crusty patches on the skin and are caused by excessive, long term exposure to UV radiation. People with fair skin are most commonly affected but lesions can also appear in people with darker skin. Solar Keratosis lesions are pre-cancerous, which means they have the potential to progress to a skin cancer known as squamous cell carcinoma. If you notice changes in the appearance of a lesion, have it checked carefully by a doctor as soon as possible.

How ALA-PDT works

ALA-PDT uses photodynamic therapy (PDT) to destroy pre-cancerous or cancerous cells and prevent them from growing or multiplying by causing a reaction between a medicated cream (ALA) and a light source (PDT).

What does ALA-PDT treatment involve?

First the Skin is prepared by removing any excess scaliness. This is followed by the application of a medicated cream to the area being treated. This cream remains on the skin for three hours, which allows the affected skin to absorb the active ingredient. During this time you are welcome to leave the clinic, but you MUST ensure you keep your face protected from the sun with a hat. Avoid applying sunscreen.

Upon returning to the clinic, the skin will be treated with a combination of laser and light treatment. As part of the treatment we will treat capillaries, redness, brown spots and any other small lumps and bumps. This will take approximately 30 mins. Immediately after the treatment a sunscreen or post laser cream will be applied.

What happens after treatment? Are there any side effects from ALA-PDT?

It is common to experience a burning sensation during, or soon after the treatment. This discomfort usually resolves on the day of treatment and over the next few days.Common side effects include swelling, flakey skin, bruising, discomfort and heat. This may last for a week, rarely longer. Scabs and ‘milo like’ flakes may last for up to two week. More unsual side effects include ‘pustular’ white head rashes.  The best results are seen a few weeks after the treatment when the sun sports have come off and the skin is rejuvenated. Results continue to improve for months after the treatment.  Some patients have reported “it’s taken 10 years off my face!”

It is recommended that you follow up the treatment with ongoing use of active skin care, and sunscreen, for the best and prolonged results. It is also possible that the keratosis will return, and most patients repeat the treatment after 12-24 months.
