Gut health - what's it got to do with skin?

08-15-2016

As the father of medicine Hippocrates said "All disease begins in the gut”

Recent research is also showing us a very strong connection between the health of the gut and overall health, including mental health & skin conditions.

If the gut is inflamed, this impacts the integrity of the gut lining and the inflammatory cytokines (chemical messengers) can 'leak' through causing inflammation in other organs - including the brain and the skin.

To holistically approach health we must address gut issues first. Signs of a compromised digestive system include;

  • Food intolerances or allergies
  • Bloating, pain & gas
  • Constipation or diarrhoea (or both)
  • Food& sugar cravings
  • Cognitive issues - 'foggy' head, difficulty concentrating or issues with memory, recall & mood.

If this is something that you think may be contributing to your skin, or just your general health,  Book in to see our Functional Medicine Nutritionist, Emma Park. She can help you decipher the the relationship between what you eat and how your skin reacts.
